There’s a New Xbox Series X Home Menu Layout | S in development and puts Xbox Game Pass at the forefront.
Available Now to Xbox Insiders on Alpha Ring, the New Xbox Series X Home Menu Layout | S prominently features Xbox Game Pass at its core. The layout should be released to all Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S owners in 2023, but if you want to take a closer look at it sooner, consider joining the Xbox Insider program.
Demonstrated by The Verge’s Tom Warren in a short video (below), the Xbox Game Pass ‘Recently Added’ tab is now just below the last used apps at the top of the home menu. This means you won’t need to open the Xbox Game Pass app to see what’s been added to the service.
A good thing for Game Pass?
I’m an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscriber, and while I love the service, I’m not really a fan of how this new UI layout is a constant, subtle reminder that the service exists.
In the video, Warren mentions that the layout looks like a giant Xbox Game Pass ad, and I couldn’t agree more. Xbox Game Pass is a good enough service that its value easily spreads by word of mouth, so you may not need to be as aggressive in your marketing.
It also risks alienating non-subscribers. Whether it’s an accessibility issue or you just don’t want another subscription on your monthly account, not all Xbox owners make use of the Xbox Game Pass ecosystem.
Fortunately, Microsoft reconsiders the layout to be a little less straightforward, or alternatively, remain non-intrusive for those who don’t subscribe to Xbox Game Pass. While I remain a fan of the service and have gotten a lot of use out of its ever-growing library and Xbox Cloud Gaming, it’s certainly not something everyone will want to be advertised to them constantly.
