Elden Ring’s latest PvP issue has just been nerfed as part of From Software’s latest round of combat balance changes.
PvP in Elden Ring is a mess at best, but one Ash of War in particular (collectible abilities that can be linked to your equipped weapon) has recently turned the game’s multiplayer combat into hell.
That skill is Endure, and it provides a huge boost to damage absorption and balance, the latter of which prevents your character from staggering when hit. Fortunately, developer From Software finally split the PvP and PvE balance into two categories in a massive October 2022 update. Unfortunately, not everything went as planned, and Endure received a particularly poignant buff.
For a brief period of time, Elden Ring PvP players were able to cast Endure ad nauseam, preventing most incoming damage while doing absolutely nothing. Fortunately, From Software quickly adapted to its overpowered nature and has now had its lifespan significantly reduced as of this latest patch.
Elden Ring can never solve its problems with PvP balance. The massive PS5 and Xbox Series X action RPG | S might be a game of the year contender, but could its overwhelming size be both harmful and beneficial?
I say this because while I love how massive The Lands Between is as a setting, there are a ton of things to find and learn. When it comes to balancing skills for PvP then this can’t be an easy thing to get right. And the issues with Endure are far from the only issues Elden Ring’s PvP has seen in the past year.
Back in August, From Software had to nerf the frustrating Bloodhound Step Ash of War as one of the game’s most infamous examples of balancing a broken skill. At least now that PvP and PvE balancing are being addressed separately, From Software can put an ability under a microscope while only affecting one aspect of the game.
Not that this doesn’t come with its own set of risks (Endure wasn’t exactly the most precious skill before its colossal buff), but it does mean the developer can actually work to fix Elden Ring’s most notorious PvP issues.
Ultimately, I think the size of Elden Ring means From Software won’t be able to fully balance PvP effectively. There will always be something that upsets that desired balance.
I think I would prefer From Software’s upcoming action RPG to be a little smaller in scale. Something like Bloodborne or Sekiro, which have relatively fewer weapons and buildings, but a good deal of depth within each.
